What is AI discoverability?
AI discoverability is how easily AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews can find, read, understand, and quote a web page. It depends on whether their crawlers are allowed in, whether content loads without JavaScript, how clearly the page identifies who’s behind it, and whether it answers questions in specific, quotable language.
Honello’s AI discoverability check runs ten measured checks on the live page and scores the result as AI Discoverability, out of 100. It flags the blockers first, such as a robots.txt rule that shuts out AI search crawlers or a page that’s empty until JavaScript runs, because no amount of good writing helps if an assistant can’t load the page.

What the AI discoverability check covers
Ten checks, grouped by what they decide: can an assistant get in, can it understand you, and will it quote you.
AI crawler access
Whether robots.txt blocks the crawlers AI assistants use, such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Claude-SearchBot, weighted by how much each one matters.
Content without JavaScript
Whether your headline and key content are in the page’s HTML. Many AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript, so a page that renders client-side can look empty.
Structured data and entity clarity
Whether schema markup and the page itself make it clear what the business is, who’s behind it, and what the page is about.
Answer-shaped content
Question-style headings with direct answers underneath, which assistants can lift and cite on their own.
Depth, specifics, and structure
Enough substance to be useful, specific facts and numbers worth quoting, and semantic landmarks like header, main, and nav.
Freshness and llms.txt
Visible publish or update dates, and whether the site offers an llms.txt file (optional, and weighted lightly).

AI Discoverability Check FAQs
Straight answers to the questions we hear most.
How do I know if ChatGPT can read my website?
Check that your robots.txt doesn’t block OAI-SearchBot or ChatGPT-User, that your firewall doesn’t block them as bots, and that your main content is in the page’s HTML rather than loaded by JavaScript. Honello’s AI discoverability check tests all three on your live page.
Will blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI’s training crawler. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and user-requested page visits use ChatGPT-User, so you can block training while staying available to search. Honello checks each crawler separately.
Does my site need an llms.txt file?
It’s optional. llms.txt is a proposed standard for summarizing a site for language models, but major assistants haven’t confirmed they use it to choose sources. Honello notes whether you have one and weights it lightly; crawler access and content matter far more.
Is AI discoverability the same as AEO or GEO?
They’re closely related. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) describe the work of getting cited in AI answers. AI discoverability is the measurable foundation of that work: whether assistants can reach, read, and quote the page at all.
Is the AI discoverability check included in the free scan?
Yes. Every scan, including the free one, includes the AI discoverability review along with the UX audit and on-page SEO checks.
